What's the current status of the race and what comes next?

The US elections are half a year away.

As the November election approaches, here are the main topics and obstacles confronting presumed candidates Joe Biden and Donald Trump.

A crackdown on student demonstrations supporting Palestine, Donald Trump's trial for hush money violations, and political disputes over overseas assistance and immigration have been prominent in recent US news.

These matters have highlighted profound splits within the nation as it approaches what's predicted to be a fierce contest for the White House between the current Democratic President Joe Biden and his Republican forerunner, Trump.

However, for most Americans, the presidential election on November 5 — precisely six months away — isn't yet a priority.

"In the US, many people still aren't engaged. Despite efforts from us and the political elite, the majority of Americans aren't focused on the election," remarked Erik Nisbet, a professor specializing in policy analysis and communication at Northwestern University.

"People typically start paying attention in September," he added. "But now, it's crucial to disseminate your narratives and consolidate and mobilize your support base."
