The US Ambassador to Sri Lanka condemned today's violence against anti-government protesters, saying at least 78 people had been injured in attacks by government supporters.
She also demanded that the government conduct a thorough investigation into the incident.
"We condemn today's violence against peaceful protestors and call on the government to conduct a full investigation, including the arrest and prosecution of anyone who incited violence," said US Ambassador Julie Chung in a tweet.
"Our hearts go out to those who have been injured today, and we urge calm and restraint across the island," she added.
