Covid-19 has resulted in a loss of education in Sri Lanka, according to the National Institute of Education (NIE).

The National Institute of Schooling (NIE) of Sri Lanka has developed a new approach to compensate for the loss of education sustained by the country's schoolchildren as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Dr. Sunil Jayantha Nawaratna, Director General of the National Institute of Education, indicated that under the proposed approach, priority will be given to vital areas of the curriculum, and that a plan has been developed to offset the loss in education and learning for the years 2020 and 2021.

He stated that the time period from November of this year to March of the following year has been set aside for this purpose, with the possibility of it being extended until April. During that time, he said, education sessions will be held.

Dr. Nawaratna stated that this will take effect on November 1st, and that school principals and instructors will be able to choose how to cover the curriculum.

He noted that the ideas were put out after conversations with the Ministry of Education and the Commissioner General of Examinations, and that they might be changed based on the examinations planned.

Meanwhile, the National Institute of Education has calculated the amount of learning loss that students across the island have endured as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to its estimates, learning loss in the Western province will be 55 percent by 2020, while learning loss in other provinces would be 45 percent.

According to Dr Sunil Jayantha Nawaratna, it is expected to be 90% in the Western Province and 70% in the remaining provinces by 2020.
