Users reported that WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook had gone down in various regions of the world on Monday evening.
''Sorry, but something went wrong. We're working on it and will have it corrected as soon as possible,” stated a notice on the Facebook page.
Users on Twitter reported that the prominent social networking and communication sites were unreachable around 9 p.m.
The website downdetector.com, which records web services, also reported a significant increase in user complaints.
According to the portal, there were over 20,000 occurrences of users reporting problems with Facebook and Instagram.
Meanwhile, the social media giant's instant messaging platform WhatsApp was unavailable to over 14,000 users, while Messenger was unavailable to over 3,000.
All three Facebook-owned properties are market leaders in their categories of instant messaging, photo sharing and social networking.
