Saudi Arabia, the world's largest oil exporter, has pledged to reduce carbon emissions to zero by 2060.

Saudi Arabia declares that it will achieve "net zero" greenhouse gas emissions by 2060, ahead of the global COP26 climate summit.

Saudi Arabia, one of the world's top oil producers, revealed plans to achieve "net zero" greenhouse gas emissions by 2060, joining more than 100 countries in a global effort to combat man-made climate change.

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman made the announcement on Saturday in rehearsed remarks at the start of the kingdom's first-ever Saudi Green Initiative Forum, timed to create a statement before the commencement of the global COP26 climate conference in Glasgow, Scotland.

Although the monarchy intends to cut emissions within its boundaries, there is no indication that the kingdom will slow down investments in oil and gas or lose control over energy markets by shifting away from the production of fossil fuels.

Despite efforts to diversify revenue as the world increasingly moves to transition away from reliance on fossil fuels, energy exports remain the backbone of Saudi Arabia's economy.

Oil is expected to generate $150 billion in revenue for the government this year alone.
