Due to the Facebook downtime, Signal and Telegram have gained millions of new users.

Facebook experienced a global outage that lasted six hours and affected all of its programs, including WhatsApp messaging and Instagram.

During the extended unavailability of Facebook Inc.'s network of apps and services, downloads and user sign-ups skyrocketed for Signal and Telegram, two private communication apps.

On Monday, millions of new users joined the Edward Snowden-endorsed Signal, according to a tweet from the company. According to Sensor Tower, Telegram, whose functionality is similar to WhatsApp's, has risen 55 places to the top of the U.S. iPhone download ranking.

Facebook experienced a six-hour outage that affected its WhatsApp messaging, the main social network, and the photo-sharing service Instagram, causing many of its 2.7 billion global users to be disconnected. Some of the company's employees were laid off as a result of the situation, which prompted Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg to issue a public apology.

Other social media platforms benefited from Facebook's demise. Twitter Inc.'s network remained operational, with CEO Jack Dorsey expressing his support for Signal as a suitable WhatsApp alternative and reiterating Snowden's advice to his followers to abandon the Facebook-owned service. Thousands of rooms are available on the audio-chat app. A representative for Clubhouse stated that the outage got people talking, and that all of the service's key metrics had risen as a result.

Signal's emphasis on privacy has made it a favorite for encrypted conversations, as seen by its policy of not collecting any data on its users and so avoiding circumstances where governments may compel it to give personally identifiable information. In the past, Telegram has gained millions of subscribers in the aftermath of significant WhatsApp disruptions.
