Sri Lanka receives four million additional Sinopharm medicines; final batch is on SPC order

On Saturday (18), Sri Lanka received four million doses of the Chinese Sinopharm COVID-19 vaccine, the final batch of an order placed by the State Pharmaceutical Corporation (SPC).

According to the Chinese embassy in Sri Lanka, the consignment marks the completion of a deal between the SPC and the producer.

To date, Sri Lanka has received a total of 26 million doses of Sinopharm. It is the most extensively used vaccine on the island, with over 10 million people receiving the first dose, and over 8 million fully immunized.

By Friday (17), 13.72 million people had gotten the first dosage of one of the five COVID-19 vaccinations distributed in Sri Lanka, with 10.9 million receiving both the first and second doses.

State Minister of Pharmaceutical Production, Supply, and Regulation Channa Jayasumana stated that by Friday (17), health authorities had vaccinated 50 percent of the overall population.

“At first, our main goal was to vaccinate everyone over the age of 30. According to data, there will be around 11.5 million persons over the age of 30 by mid-2020. We have now met that aim to a significant extent,” Jayasumana said in an interview with the privately owned Derana network on Saturday (18).

“At the time, our goal was to vaccinate those aged 20 to 29. We have 3.3 million people in the group. “We still have 14.8 million people to vaccinate,” he added, adding that this will be done using 713,000 doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, which will be available in the coming weeks.

“With yesterday's decision to vaccinate all youngsters aged 15 to 19, as well as those with congenital diseases and other comorbidities aged 12 to 14, we now have a total of 16.7 million people.”

According to Jayasumana, 13.7 million people had been vaccinated with the first dose as of Friday (17), with another three million still to be inoculated.
