Flights have been canceled as a result of a new volcanic eruption on the Canary Islands.

Fresh evacuations have been requested as a result of explosions and new openings reported from La Palma's Cumbre Vieja volcano.

Planes have been grounded on the Spanish Canary Island of La Palma owing to a new volcanic eruption, the first cancellation of flights since the Cumbre Vieja volcano erupted this week.

Vast explosions and fresh openings at the volcano, which blasted a large cloud of thick, black ash into the air, prompted new evacuations on Friday.

Binter, Canaryfly, and the national carrier, Iberia, all had flights booked for Friday, but all were canceled.

“It is not yet feasible to determine when we will be able to resume flights,” said Spanish carrier Binter on Twitter.
